Let's embark on a journey through some of the most beloved destinations among Japanese expats and enthusiasts in Düsseldorf, with a special focus on spots perfect for a fun family outing.
During the summer holidays of 2024, I had a sudden idea to travel to Luxembourg, a four-and-a-half-hour drive from The Hague. On the way back, I made my first stop in Düsseldorf and I will share our experiences with you!
Sushi Spots: A Culinary Adventure for the Whole Family
A taste of Japan in Dusseldorf: sushi restaurant MARUYASU
MARUYASU IMMERMANN
[Address: Immermann Str.11 40210 Düsseldorf]
*It is important to note that debit cards issued outside Germany cannot be used. So we had to go to an ATM to withdraw cash‼
This time we stopped in Dusseldorf on our way back to the Netherlands from our trip to Luxembourg. When we arrived, it was past lunchtime and other sushi restaurants were closed until the evening, so we went to MARUYAS, which was still open after 2pm.
MARUYASU is a sushi and Japanese food restaurant established in 1983, with a total of 10 restaurants in Düsseldorf, Meerbusch and Frankfurt.
If you want sushi in The Hague, the Netherlands, where we now live, it is more satisfying to buy fresh tuna and salmon from a fishmonger (because it is expensive for a family of five...) and make your own hand-rolled sushi or thin maki than to go to a restaurant.
Of course, MARUYASU's menu is also more expensive than sushi in Japan.
But the children in particular were very excited the moment they stepped into MARUYASU.
The sushi with salmon roe on it cost €3.9 per roll, so when my second daughter asked for three pieces, I hesitated... In the end, I cheated her by saying, ‘Let's have one salmon roe and eat a variety of other things!’ :) Ha-ha!
You can take out or eat in. There are so many different types of bento that it's hard to choose. Reasonable prices. There is a wide variety of rice bowls, sushi and noodles. All dishes were delicious!
My husband ordered the donburi with egg-braised pork cutlet and was impressed with the miso soup as a garnish.
I would recommend MARUYASU to both sushi connoisseurs and beginners to Japanese cuisine! It is also easy to go there with children!
Japanese Bookstores in Düsseldorf: A Treasure Trove of Literature and Manga
Takagi GmbH -Books & More-(高木書店): A Hidden Gem in Düsseldorf
[Address: Immermannstr. 31, 40210 Düsseldorf, Germany
When my husband and I, who were born and raised in Japan, stepped into this bookshop, we said, ‘Wow! A very Japanese bookshop!’ We were thrilled. It was like a nostalgic feeling.
Nestled in the heart of Düsseldorf's bustling Altstadt, Takagi Bookstore is a haven for bibliophiles seeking a curated selection of Japanese literature and manga. Established in 2002 by passionate bookworm Takagi-san, the store has become a cherished destination for both locals and international visitors.
Stepping into Takagi Bookstore is like entering a portal to another world. The shelves are lined with an impressive collection of Japanese books, ranging from classic novels and poetry to contemporary works and popular manga series. Takagi-san, with his extensive knowledge of Japanese literature, is always happy to assist customers in finding the perfect book.
In addition to its vast selection of books, Takagi Bookstore also hosts regular events, such as author readings and book clubs. These events provide a wonderful opportunity for Japanese literature enthusiasts to connect and share their love of books.
If you're looking for a unique and authentic Japanese bookstore experience, Takagi Bookstore is a must-visit. With its charming atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, and wide selection of books, you're sure to find something to pique your interest.
Asian Supermarkets: A Culinary Journey Through the East
HANARO Market
[Address: Immermannstraße 45c in 40210 Düsseldorf]
We also stopped at a supermarket that a Japanese friend who had lived in Düsseldorf on assignment in the past told me about. There is parking in the basement of the hotel next to it, so it is safe even if you have bought a lot!
The shop has a good selection of products and is spacious, so it has become a favourite of ours. (It was crowded because of the popularity of the shop.) I was able to buy a lot of things at more affordable prices than at the Asian Market in the Netherlands.
